Ocala is a city in Marion County, Florida. The county is one of the major Thoroughbred centers of the world, and has over 1,200 horse farms in total and about 600 Thoroughbred farms. Ocala began undergoing rapid growth in the 1970s with the development of the Interstate 75 and the construction of Disney World.

Males had a median income of $29,739 versus $24,367 for females. The city’s per capita income was $18,021. Around 13.2% of families and 18.1% of the population live below the poverty line, including 28.6% of those under age 18 and 9.8% of those age 65 or over. In 1995, the city was named the winner of the All-America City Award.
